After I started to get active in shooting Service Rifle High Power, I decided to buy The Competitive AR15 by Glen D. Zediker.
Prior to my foray into Service Rifle HP, I had already been familiar with the AR15 platform and reloading for it. My father bought a Colt Sporter Lightweight 16" carbine back in 1992 and I had learned how to shoot it back then. Not very well, but I learned how to shoot it. After that, I started getting into M1 Garands and Garand matches which led into using the AR15 in Service Rifle HP.
While I was already familiar with the fundamentals of HP and the AR15 (and handloading for HP), I wanted to get a copy of The Competitive AR15 to enhance my knowledge base.
As the title of the book indicates, the focus of the content is the use of the AR15 in competitive shooting, specifically High Power. It briefly makes discusses the use of the AR15 in 3-gun and 'action' shooting competition, but not enough to provide detailed insight into these types of competitions.
The book starts off discussing the how the AR15 became the dominant rifle in Service Rifle HP in the mid-90s (specifically improvements to the bullet designs). Then it covers the various improvements made on the military M16 design upon for maximum accuracy (such as the float tube).
A good portion of the book addresses handloading ammunition for the AR15. As pointed out earlier in the text, the improvements in the bullets and ammunition available for the AR15 is one of the major reasons why the AR15 is now dominant in Service Rifle HP. Thus, it makes sense why there would be a long discussion of handloading in this book.
The latter section of the book discusses the actual shooting of the AR15 in Service Rifle HP. In between the core sections, there are transcripts of interviews with persons involved in competition AR15 shooting.
Overall, the content of the book is well focused. The flow of the book is good and the information is given to the reader in a good sequence. But the structure is a bit convoluted. The writing can be very technically sound, yet quite often, the syntax of the writing gets very informal, almost like a personal journal. Thus, the syntax and rules of language strays often.
Also, the book was originally published in 1998. Though, this is not too much of a factor in the quality of the content since not much as changed with regards to the AR15 in Service Rifle HP.
Although, I don't know if I can recommend this book to anyone. Nearly all the concepts, ideas, theories, and information in the book I was already familiar with. I had obtained all of it from my own personal experience with the AR15 platform and Service Rifle HP, and from information on the Internet (information sites and bulletin boards).
I think the person that would get the most benefit from this book is a person who is just starting in Service Rifle HP and has never shot the AR15 in this format of competition. For instance, if a person does not know what type of bullet or ammunition to use in the AR15 for Service Rifle HP, that person would benefit from this book.
The Competitive AR15 is available from most reputable Internet shooting vendors and can also be purchased direct from Glen D. Zediker's website.
