Hornady announces new Garand safe .30-06 ammunition [Industry News]
Hornady has announced the addition of new .30-06 ammunition to their product line. What makes this announcement special is that the ammunition is specifically designed for the M1 Garand.

This is excellent news for the M1 Garand owner/shooter that doesn't reload, and needs quality ammunition that doesn't have steel core or jackets (due to range restrictions on such ammunition).

Before this announcement, there hasn't been any readily available 'Garand-safe' commercial ammunition available on the market. The M1 Garand requires a specific pressure curve for safe operation for the M1 gas system. Thus, in order to guarantee that ammunition contains powder that is safe for the Garand gas system, the non-handloader has to use military surplus M2 ball.

Hornady should be praised for heeding the call for quality Garand-safe ammunition.

Lapua to release new .224" 77gr BTHP [Industry News]
Lapua has announced a new 22 caliber (.224") bullet under their Scenar line. This new bullet is a 77 grain boat tail hollow point design, similar to the Sierra Match King and Nosler Custom Competition 77gr BTHP bullets.

Lapua representatives at the SHOT Show have indicated that the Lapua Scenar .224"/77gr can be seated to magazine length for the AR-15" (approximately 2.260"). Lapua claims this new bullet has a ballistic coefficient of .402 (compared to .362 to .372 for the Sierra and .340 for the Nosler).

Product sample measurements give a base to tip length of 1.041" and base to ogive length of .613" using the Hornady Lock-n-Load bullet comparator gauge. For comparison, the Sierra Match King 77gr BTHP and the Nosler Custom Competition 77gr BTHP have base to ogive measurements (using the same gauge) of approximately .565" and .578", respectively. The Sierra and Nosler have base to tip lengths of approximately .970" and .980", respectively.

The Lapua representatives have indicated that the new Lapua Scenar should make it to Stateside distributors in March/April 2008 and that Graf and Sons (an official Lapua distributor) should receive the first shipments.
